I did not publish this article yesterday because time seemed to slip out of my hands and just didn’t get to writing. So, please except my apologize if you were hoping to read this article yesterday. Time is slipping through my hands quickly today so I better get started
.
If you have not already, don’t forget to read the article I wrote about Twitter.
Pownce
When I decided to experiment more with micro blogging sites Pownce was the second on the list to test. The only similarity Pownce and Twitter really have is that they both offer micro blogging. Pownce however offers much more than just 147 character entries. The major difference is that with Pownce account you can send long notes (not sure what the character limit is if there is a limit) and send files (10 mb with free account, 100 mb with a pro account). The look and feel of the site is also very different. Pownce is more like a mini social website.
I going to offer a pros and cons list to better explain the usefulness of this site. There are more pros than cons because the more I researched it’s usefulness the more benefits I found.
Pros
- You can write long notes.
- You can include links with notes. Links to Youtube videos created embedded video. Links to images embed pictures on to your site as well.
- You can share files. This could very useful for business professional as well as people just wanting to share their favorite song.
- Your Twitter updates can be posted to your Pownce account.
- You can post upcoming events very easily.
- You can include other profiles (StumbleUpon, Twitter, Jaiku, Digg, etc.) that appear in the sidebar.
- You can include links to your website(s) or favorite sites. These links also appear in the sidebar.
- You can send notes, links and files to just your friends. By changing your settings you can send notes, links and files to the public, all of your friends or privately to only one of your friends or friend sets.
- Desktop software is available for download.
- You can group friends into sets. This makes it easy send files to a group of people such as co-workers or business contacts.
Cons
- You have to create a Pro account in order to customize your theme. A Pro account is only $20 a year but that seems a bit much for someone who just want to change the look of their page. For those that want to share large files the pro account would be worth the money.
- Friending people is not as easy as with Twitter. You are directed to the profile of each member that you friend.
- Sometimes things run a bit slow. Messages seem to take too long to post at times. This might just me my experience with this site.
I think once the general socializing public discover the usefulness of Pownce it will grow very quickly. It’s not like it’s a small company by any means but it’s not quite as popular as Twitter. Though it has more useful features than Twitter, it could be that people just like Twitters simplicity.
I guess I am going to have admit to myself that I can’t write more than one review at a time. Yet another day of time slipping away from me. This time I am not going to promise the continuation of this series will be posted tomorrow but I will definitely try. The next social micro blogging site to be reviewed in Jaiku. Jaiku is probably my favorite micro blogging site to date. I will tell you why that is in the next review.
