Website Makeover Project - Using Self Hosted Wordpress To Improve Exsiting Website

From the start of the Website Makeover Project I have suggested to my client that he should have a blog. There are many benefits to having a blog verses only using a traditional html website. In fact in many cases all you need is a blog. A self hosted Wordpress blog offers webmasters many freedoms for customizing. Some of the benefits of include; ease of use for visitor and webmaster, 3 step theme changing, access to hundreds of useful and free themes and plugins, and a self hosted Wordpress blog can be modified to fit your needs (unlike many other free host themes).

The main reason I use Wordpress is because of the freedom to modify themes and the fact that I have access to hundreds of free plugins. Plugins offer “blogmasters” the ability to customize a blog to fit their needs. Not all plugins work for all blogs but with hundreds to choose from, many are essential for blog success.

My suggestion to the client of the Website Makeover Project was to find one of the many free themes available. With so many free themes to choose from I didn’t feel it necessary to purchase a theme. And since I have some knowledge of modifying free themes I though I could make all necessary changes.

Most of the time I suggest that people use a three column theme because it offers more options for selling ads space and including useful tools. The theme my client chose is only a two column theme but I think it will be fine for the time being. The theme itself fits the look of the home page (OnTrackMagazine.Com). So far I have the theme setup and have included the customized header. I have not yet added any plugins. My next step is to access the needs of this particular website to decide what plugins will work best.

Progress is going well with the project and I am confident that OnTrackMagazine.Com will be making money soon.

A side note to potential blog authors or exsiting blog authors looking for a good web host for your blog.

I have worked with a lot of web hosts and so far I have found my own web host to be the best. The recent Website Makeover Project has given me the chance to work with yet another web host. This particular web host and most web hosts for that matter, are fine for the average users but if you are planning on creating multiple Wordpress blogs and/or websites that require a database then I think you should consider using Hostgator.

With unlimited MySLQ databases, unlimited domain, unlimited sub domains, unlimited ftp accounts, unlimited bandwidth and 1,000 gb of disk space you will have no reason to ever upgrade (unless of course you are ready to upgrade to the much more expensive dedicated server hosting). Plus you get all of this for the lowest price I have found. $14.95 to pay month to month,$12.95 a month with 3 year contract, $13.95 a month with a 2 year contract. They also have low plans that start at $4.95 a month. Visit Hostgator (this is a referral) for more details.

    Hi Mona,
Looks like your Website Makeover project is ‘rockin’ along.

A blog definitely has it’s advantages & I’m definitely looking at a 3 column option for one of my sites.

I also use Hostgator & have been very happy with the service. The added advantage is definitely the unlimited domains & subdomains.

A blog with regular updates can generate regular visitors which translates to regular revenue. Good luck with your website makeover project! :D

Mona, what do you have to say about this claim made by Thomas? Is that true?
