15 Things I Learned In 2007 That Improved My Blogging and Increased My Income

#4 Be in it for the long haul

As I have mentioned throughout the 15 things countdown, sticking with your blogging venture is very important. If you research successful people online, one thing most have in common is that they have been in it for at least a few years. Yes, there are those that become “over night” success stories but the average person becomes successful after a year or two of working at it. When everyone else has given up, those that decided to stay in it for the long haul usually have success stories to share.

Within a week of launching iwebis I had a decent following because of the Mass Buzz Experiment. It wasn’t exactly an over night success story but I was thrilled to have had such a response after just a week. Even though I enjoyed the few weeks of fame I wasn’t really that disappointed or surprised when the buzz wore off. The first week of launch was a effective catapult but it was iwebis content that was going to either keep this blog moving forward or not. Time would be the real judge to whether this blog was gaining respect or become just another Wordpress blog.

My definition is of success is not really about massive amounts of readers but instead about whether what I am contributing to the Internet is useful and whether I am able to be a positive influence in the lives for others. I would much rather build a name as a respected authority (not for the purpose of recognition) than strive for better page rank or more traffic. Recognition and money are not my main motivators, though I would be lying if I said they were not a motivation at all.

As we have seen with the Website Makeover Project, allowing time to pass is not all it takes to become successful by my standards as well as the standards of the blogosphere in general. There are of course other factors to consider but if we don’t enter into a venture with a “long haul” mindset we might as well not even start.

#15 - Not all monetizing options are best for your blog.
#14 - Don’t be afraid to set goals and don’t be afraid to fail.
#13- Strive to become an authority.
#12 - Contribute quality content to other blogs and networks.
#11- Write down your ideas.
#10 - Content may be King but it’s not everything.
#9 - You don’t have to invest a lot of money but you must invest time.
#8 - Evaluate and reevaluate on a regular basis
#7 - Take advice from others seriously.
#6 - Successful blogging is an art form not a formula
#5 - Diversify and don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Until tomorrow :)
