#5 Diversify and don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

I am not sure the exact origin of the saying “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket” but I did find an explanation of the phrase that I understand as true.

“Put all your eggs in one basket” - To rely too much on one resource or one line of effort; to risk everything on a single venture.

This phrase as been a motto for me the last year or so. I have become a believer in diversifying and trying a few things at the same time. The idea is that if one idea fails I can then put my more energy into the ideas that are working. The down side to this method is that I can only give small amounts of time investment at a time for each venture instead of all of my time investment for one venture. I don’t worry to much about not being able to invest huge amounts of time for each venture because long term time investment matters more anyway.

Since I blog my interests I find that the don’t put all your eggs in one basket approach has helped me find balance as a human being. I am creating my own work environment by blogging about things that I enjoy which means it doesn’t seem so much like work since I enjoy doing it. I am not a slave to work because my blogging is based on things I am interested in. This type of thinking is not always shared by other people but I find it to be rewarding instead of enslaving so I don’t have plans to change.

Blogging is not the only venture I am involved in either. I have a few other projects that I believe with time will prove to be rewarding and profitable. It is true that some people can become very successful by concentrating on one venture at a time but I don’t think that is the case for most people so don’t put all your eggs in one basket and diversify ;) .

I agree. I believe in diversification in investing but also in income. I would love to have my online income grow to a significant contribution to my overall income. And I would rather have that income not all come from one source. I think it is safer to have several sources so if one dries up the others can sustain you.
