#10 Content May Be King But It’s Not Everything

If you have read iwebis for any amount of time you already know that I am a firm believer in offer good content whether it be on your own blog, someone else blog or a social community. But contrary to popular belief content is not everything when you are trying to build a blog that makes money.

If we expand on the idea that Content = King then we really need to see your blog as a kingdom and realize there are other important players involved when running a Kingdom. The king may be ruler but he cannot rule by himself.

There are at least 3 other important players when running a successful blog (kingdom).

  1. Relevant blog content is important. - If your blog is about bowling balls and you start blogging about fishing nets may loose readers, credibility and the chance to become an authority in the bowling ball niche and even in fishing nets. If you want to start writing about fishing nets then start another blog, don’t add it to your existing bowl ball blog ;). The point is expand on the existing niche topic but keep to the idea of your niche.
  2. User Experience and Advertisement Awareness. If you wondering why I put a picture of an ugly bird in this post it is because design, user experience and advertising awareness balanced with good content makes a huge difference in appealing to readers as well as advertisers.
Blog design does not have to be beautiful but it should offer the user/reader comfort and ease of use. It should also offer advertisers options for good ad placement. There is certainly a point when the ads can overrule the content and that is something we all need to be careful not to happen.
  3. Proper headlines can keep bringing in traffic. If content is king but no one know about it then how useful it is? Headlines really do matter. Not only can you continue to gain traffic even years after you have posted but you can offer internet searches relevancy. How many times have you searched a topic and had to search through garbage before you found what you were looking for. Do yourself and others a favor by using the top keywords in your posts in your headline.
  4. Let your readers know you are interested in their opinion. A good king will listen to his people. Enough said ;)

There are other factors but the four I mentioned are probably most important beside quality content.

15 Things I Learned In 2007 That Improved My Blogging and Increased My Income

#14 - Don’t be afraid to set goals and don’t be afraid to fail.
#13- Strive to become an authority.

I found a few other posts I found on other blogs dealing with this topic.
