As I mentioned a few days ago I have taken on my first consultant job. Friends of mine, Dave and Becky, have a website that has a very good amount of traffic. This site launched over 5 years ago and has been gaining popularity ever since. Dave has worked very hard with designing and creating content, while Becky’s photographs are of well known musicians that are published on the site as well. Even though this site has acquired as much as 600,000 hits in one month the site has made them no money.
After having a discussion with Dave about his website I was certain that I could help them make money with it. I figured that if I could make over $4,000 on my blogs within a year and a half with traffic that doesn’t even come close to their website I could easily help them to make their minimum goal of $200 - $300 a month.
On Sunday we had our first meeting and it went very well. Before meeting with Dave I created an outline for us to follow. My outline wasn’t the most professional but it served it’s purpose. I decided to categorize the steps we will be taking into five phases. Here is what I came up with.
- Phase One - Asses the situation
- Phase Two - Explore options for site improvement and income - long term and short term
- Phase Three - Plan for immediate changes - start blog, place advertisements, etc.
- Phase Four - Plan for future changes - website design, income opps, seo, traffic increase, social networking, etc.
- Phase Five - Advertising campaign in effect and officially launch new Web 2.0 website.
Our first meeting covered Phase One which included acquiring stats and traffic details, content information, immediate and some long term goals for the website. Dave didn’t have the information about traffic details with him so we had to go over the other points.
Assessments I have made so far is that the website needs some design upgrades but the main improvements have more to do with offering visitors more interaction. From what I understand about Web 2.0 is that websites offer user generated content. People have also given Web 2.0 a specific look or defined it as a look that is outdated from old website (web 1.0) , like scrolling banners and cursor images.
So by now you are probably wondering why I haven’t included a link to the website. Don’t worry I will soon. I want to get the website stats before I include a link to the website. I want to have a full understanding of the website before I let you guys in. I should be acquiring the information I need this week so I will either post it late this week or next week.
I have called this project the Website Makeover Project because it reminds me of the Extreme Home Makeover television show. Though I don’t think I will be changing the look to any extreme I will hopefully help improve the sites income, visibility and update the design a bit.
My goals for this project is to first help Dave and Becky make money with their site but also help others in similar situations. I also hope to offer bloggers who have not yet explore income opportunities that actually make make money.
