Creating your own networking is becoming the popular thing to do of late. People can now create a network of their very own with the topic of their choosing. A little over a month ago I decided I was going to attempt to build my own network.

As you may recall I had to decide which ‘create your own network’ would be the best. There were really only two network hosts that were worth considering and after a few days of thought I decided to go with KickApps. I am so glad I chose to go with this network host because it allows me to do so much more than I originally thought. Ning was the other option but with Ning I would not have been able to seamlessly implement the social network with in my existing blog.

For over a year now I have been the author of a horse related blog and have acquired a decent following. What I discovered (not really a surprise) is that horse people love to talk about their horses and their love for horses. YouTube has thousands of videos related to horses. There are a large number of active forums and blog as well as horse photos on flickr. What if I could create a network that allowed horse lovers the chance to use all of these media types in one place?

Ning does actually have a number of social networks already created for horse people but with Ning you a limited by only being able to stay within the Ning community of networks. KickApps on the other had allows network owners to create customizable widgets that can be embedded on existing sites. I hadn’t originally planned to make Horse Approved the homepage of my network but after discovering that it was so easy to do I thought, why not?

Users can join, login and view recent activity on the Horse Approved blog homepage. I can continue to use the blog the way I previously did but with the added benefit of allowing potential members to find a great community as well as existing users to view recent activity and login to the network. If I had the knowledge there is much more I could do with the look and feel of the actual network pages by changing the style sheet codes but for now I like what I have come up with.

Today is the official public launch date for my new social network community. I am really excited about this network because it’s one that I am very much interested in. As I have said many times before it is important to blog your interests because it makes the work enjoyable. I also think creating a network does real well for my Queen of Social Networking resume ;) .
