As I have mentioned before I am in the process of creating an online community for two of my blogs. One community is already in member test phase and I think it is going well. Though I only have a few members testing the system the input I am receiving has been valuable. I have come up with a few steps that will be taken before the launch of this site. This may or may not be the best way to do it but it makes sense in my head ;) .

Step 1 - Establish a membership base through an existing blog or website. I feel it’s important to have a relationship already existing with people you have been networking with before you launch a community.

Step 2 - Test the community with test members. If you have an existing membership through a blog or website you can ask for help from those members. This is a good time to work out all the bugs even if you are not building the site yourself. I am using KickApps but I am finding things that need to be changed through my test members.

Step 3 - Network with as many new people as you can before launch. Contribute to other communities and blogs that are of the same topic as your community and let them know about your new community. I am very careful not to offer spam-like content on other sites. I feel it’s very important to create relationships and offer useful information to others before. The idea is that you scratch their back first ;) .

Step 4 - Build up the launch date. Allow your potential members to get excited about this new community. Get your awaiting members excited about prizes they could win and such.

Step 5 - As a part of launch have an advertising budget ready to spend. This does not have to be a huge budget but this is a great time to spend money on advertising. My plan is to use Adsense and buy ads space on sites related to my community.

Not all topics/niches will create good social network communities. I do think that if you find the right topic/niche you can create a user generated content community that has the potential of becoming a valuable addition to the net as well as income opportunities.

If you can think of any steps I have missed let me know. I would love feedback.
