I find myself thinking about blogging a lot and I sometimes wonder if the blogging world is at it’s peak or does it still have years of thriving usefulness. I am not saying that I think blogging will cease to exist any time soon but with the extremely fast changing internet, are we being sensitive enough to the changes that are happening?
I personally think blogging as single platform has just about reached it’s peak and readers are looking for more from blogs. You can see the changes happening if you are looking close enough. Darren from Problogger now has a video posting and Yaro from Entrepreneurs Journey uses podcasting (along with thousands of other bloggers). Now, I know these aren’t the only two professional blogger on net and not all bloggers use other media along side blogging but these two bloggers are what I would consider “following the changing web”. Darren has been blogging before you were in diapers and has seen blogging change (the before you were in diapers part was just for added emphasis and may or may not be true in your case) and has successfully been able to keep up with the changes. Therefore I think we can safely say that readers may expect to see more for other blogs as well.
Social networking seems to be spilling over into the blogging world. Sites like MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog have allowed us to see the faces of blog readers and companies like KickApps are allowing us to create our own mashup of social media and blogging communities. The direction that the web seems to be headed toward is a combination of social networking, visual and/or audio media and rich blog content. So what will become of the just plain blogs?
It could be that “just plain” blogs will be around forever just like newspapers are still being read by billions of people even though they don’t have actual moving pictures like you see in the Harry Potter movies. My prediction is only based off of a hunch and I really have no idea what the future will hold. But I do think we need to be sensitive to the small changes if we want to keep up with big changes.

At times I think I know what the next generation of the Internet will be about, and other times (like now) I think “ummmmm I dunno”. All I do know is, don’t be surprised to see a bit of a recession soon. Just like the crash in the late 90s killed a lot of the poorly run web 1.0 companies, I suspect another crash will come soon and will pave the way for web 3.0 companies. It is a bubble, and it will pop just like every other bubble in history.
If I did have to take a guess - I think web 3.0 will mash all the Web 2.0 services together and will make it easier to find content that relates to you and your interests. I think it will be about making algorithms that track your trends and learn from them (AI).
everybody’s talking about what is about to come with the Web 3.0 and have to agree tahta mos authors or theorists coincide on mashing and cult of personality will be much more important than it is now. I dunno if the bubble will pop, my guess is that way before pops will blend with the v3.0.
What will happens to plain blogs? they will remain for the ones who likes reading or simply will have a unique niche.
Jeremy, I agree with you guess. I hadn’t thought so much about the trends tracking aspect but you are absolutely right about that. Thanks for commenting.
Antonio, you make some good points. Thanks for commenting.
