Today’s Google Meme - Linky Love has to do with Social Media. I read an article on SocialMedia.biz today that was very interesting. I am most interested with the subject of social media and networking lately because I am setting up a few of my own communities right now. According to the post written by JD Lasica title Where is social networking going, which highlights recent article from a few other blogs dealing with this issue, social networking will be led by mashup portals.
Portals like GrandCentral (now owned by Google) and Yahoo Mail are trying to combine social networking with email, IM and mobile phone access. Though people will always have their favorite social networking sites to visit, portals are very likely to become the leaders in networking. People seem to be drawn to things that will make their life easier and being able to access things like your email, text messages, IMs and networking sites all in one place would make life easier.
I don’t entirely agree however that this portals will take over social networking site. I think there is something to be said about a comfortable space and feeling like you are in the place where everything is happening. To me it’s kind of like watching a baseball game on tv and watching it live. Though the cyber world is different then the live world there are similarities that are important to consider.
The cyber world still has it’s “happening” places. A portal may make people feel disconnected from the physical space (if that make any sense in cyber space) where people are connecting. I could of course be wrong and please will flock to such sites and feel very comfortable. Only time will tell and I am interested to see what happens.

Well very interesting the path this is taking for evolving. In some countries will be far behind to integrate like in other places like Mexico -my country for example-, but I’m still wondering where all this lead us. Do you think we’ll have one-placehas-it-all for social networks?
Hi Antonio,
I don’t know what the future will bring but I really don’t so there will be one-place-has-it-all. I think even if there is the perfect all in one portal people will still have their favorite places. I mean not everyone likes to go to Walmart, but would prefer the small town shop they are comfortable with. I don’t know if that is a good analogy but I think you get my point. Thanks for stopping by!;)
I have read some things that Google is penalizing PR for these things. Any news on that?
digitalnomand,
Are you talking about Google penalizing portals? I have never heard anything like that and I don’t see why they would do that anyway. But you never know. Most Google penalization scares are just rumors.
