I am a firm believer in creating a blog that looks professional even if the purpose of the blog is not for professional reasons. Of course if you are creating a blog to generate income or offer professional advice I believe it’s of utmost importance to find a professional theme. There are plenty of free professional Wordpress themes, so before you pay top dollar for one look over this top 10 list.

When it comes to choosing a theme I really thinks it’s best to go simple. Simple designs usually offer a more professional look than ones with multiple colors and layers. There was a time when scrolling text, blinking banners and such were considered “cool”, well now they are far from being cool or professional. If your goal is to get people to read your content then make your content the focus of your blog. Your design should be simple, clean and well laid out. First impressions do matter and sometimes you only have a few seconds to “impress” a visitor. Sometimes all you need to do is change a few colors to customize a free theme to fit your needs.

All of the themes below are free but most do require that you stick to the CCL so check that out before using the theme. Also be sure you read the comments that may be available on the download pages for the theme you are considering downloading. Some may have bugs that have not yet been fixed and usually that type of info comes out in the comments to the designer. These themes are not in an particular order and these themes are put on this list because I felt they were worthy. I am not a designer but I do have an eye for good blog themes and thought I would share my opinions with you.

A few of these themes are also by the same designer. Good designers usually produce multiple quality themes. I am also not offering that much information about the theme because I think the designer website would be the best place to get the details. Remember this top ten list is my own personal opinion so I don’t make any claims that these are the most popular themes, just the top 1o according to Mona ;) .

1.WPdesigner5 by Small Potato - This theme has a very clean look. With the three columns and the web 2.0 look. I really like the intro spot in the header area. I also think the navigation tabs at the top of the page is also a good feature.

2. Envy by Small Potato - There are a number of reasons I like this theme. The colors are smoothe and the design is just overall inviting. This type of themes just has a very pleasant look.

3. Greed by Small Potato - If you haven’t already figured it out I am a big fan of Small Potato’s themes. He offers some of the most professional, creative looking free themes on the net. Greed is another great three column theme that is offered for free by Small Potato. Two of my favorite things about this theme are the navigation tabs at the top and the link list at the bottom. I don’t alway like links at the bottom but I feel this theme pulls it off very nicely.

4. Wrath by Small Potato - Yes, another Small Potato theme. Hey, the guy is good, what can I say. I am also a fan of three column themes and Small Potato offers some of the best. Wrath is a little simpler than the other Small Potato themes I have listed. As I have said before, simple is usually better. I like the way Small Potato offers you the option of putting an intro at the top of this theme. It seems that the header intro is almost like his trademark. I like this option because it’s different than from most themes available and it gives your visitors a quick way to find out more about the blog.

5. IAMWW w2 DnD by Will Wilkins - I was really impressed by this theme offered by Will Wilkins. It’s simple yet effective. A theme like this is offers a newsroom feel and would make a great theme for a niche that is news related.

6. Direct Response Web 2.0 Theme by Cory Miller in collaboration with Ray Edwards - This is yet another simple and clean theme . Direct Response also offers navigation at the top of the page. This type of navigation allows visitors that are new to reading blogs easy access to the important pages. Those of us in the blogging world are familiar with the design and layout of blogs but those that are new need extra guidance. Offer and theme with easy navigation will not only please your regular readers but those that are slightly and completely clueless to how blogs work.

7. fUnique by Fahlstad -The designer of this themes actually has a number of themes that are professional and free. Again, I like this simplicity of this theme and the colors are inviting. There is a good amount of space for the two sidebars as well. Often times the sidebars in a three column themes are crowed but not in this case.

8. Dot Dot Dot by Bob - Not only does this theme offer the simple and clean look I am so fond of but it also gives you a nice space already setup to take banner ads. Not all themes do well with banner ads in the header. Some banner ads in the header just look out of place and unprofessional but this theme is designed for a banner ad in the header. I also like the sidebar #2 (or 3rd column) because Bob has given it plenty of room for text as well as banner ads if you so choose to put them there.

9. fMulti by Fahlstad - I not usually a big fan of dark themes but their are those the catch my eye. fMuli has a dark background with white text, this is a contrast that I can live with. I also think the orange as a second color was a good choice. There are only two 2 column themes I have included on my top 10 list. This is not to say that there are not some great 2 column themes out there it’s just 3 column themes are my preference.

10. AVirb Glow by Avinash - The AVirb theme is very different from the others I have listed. I decided to include one that was a little more “artsie”. This theme offers professionalism with cool colors and a original look. There is a top and bottom navigation which is something I wouldn’t recommend for all blogs but certain blog niches could pull it off. If you were to use this theme I would recommend setting your blog to only show the 2 or 3 most recent blog posts. This way your readers won’t have to scroll down to far before finding the rest of your navigation and links. I do wonder if changing the header image might be a challenge though.
