Thinking “in Blog” - I May Need Therapy

spinach.jpgDespite the advice I received from TDavid the other day, I am going to write about blogging. The topic may be “done” but I am interested in the topic of blogging and find joy in writing about it. I have been thinking a lot about blogging the last few days. Partly because of the advice I received on the content of this blog but also because I have a few blog project pending that I am constantly thinking about.
I have a tendency to think about things “in blog”. Thought’s go something like this. “Oh look! Spinach in on sale”….[transition to blog thoughts]… “Today I was in the grocery story and guess what? Spinach was on sale!”…[back to reality]…[back into blog thoughts]… “I wonder if a blog about Spinach would be a good topic?”…[spend rest of day thinking about whether spinach would be a good topic for a blog]. Just so you know I have thought about it and spinach would not a be a good blog topic ;).

I would imagine this is what writers go through on a regular basis. Since I am not a writer by profession I have never experienced this kind of thought process. It’s exciting at times as well as unnerving, especially when I spend a considerable amount of time thinking about spinach.

I guess the important thing to do when considering a blog post idea or topic for a blog itself is to blog about your interests. Deciding whether to blog about race cars, horses, cell phones, spinach or blogging can be easy if you can determine whether you are really interested in it. You have been given a small space in the web to talk about what ever it is you, as an individual, wants to talk about. Since we do want readers we should taken it upon myself to also offer useful and interesting content. I will continue to do this with this blog as well as my other blogs.

There are topics that have been over done but I don’t think you should loose all hope that yours could be successful if you are really passionate about the topic. One thing that we must remember is that the web is huge. Your take on a topic might be what a section of the world needs to hear.
I am not sure how this blog will look a year from now but be sure to know that I will always do my best to inform you and sometimes hopefully entertain you.

I actual find myself doing the reverse. Some situation arises and I just think oh yeah I had blog posts or two on that awhile back. I just want to create hyperlinks to the posts in the conversation. I figure if I just say what I remember I will forget important parts of the post… so a hyperlink would be better :-)

I tend to find myself “thinking in blog” while watching TV, talking to friends and dreaming(that’s the scariest one).

By the way, I Stumbled Upon your post about StumbleUpon…and I went ahead and Stumbled this post because I figure anyone who can post about blogging and legitimately include a Popeye cartoon deserves to be seen by as many people as possible!

The important thing is to know what the purpose of your blog is, when deciding what to blog about.

Some people really just want a blog where they can purge their thoughts, whereas if you actually want to grow a crop of consistent readers, it is important, in my opinion, to think about what people want to read, and WHY they come to your site in the first place.

    A good, thought-provoking article!

@John - That happens to me too. ;)

@ Dana - I also think of blog posts while talking to friends. It is a bit scary sometimes. ;)

@ Jayne - I think it’s important to be balanced with what you need/want to purge and what readers want to hear. I think a personal blog should be for purging personal thoughts but it is true that many want to read one’s personal thoughts because they can relate or connect.

Thank you all for stopping by :)
