Let me first start by saying I am not an expert at blog design nor do I think iwebis or any of my other blogs have the best theme but I can be very opinionated when it comes to this subject. For me, a blog theme is like the inside of a physical store. A stores atmosphere has to do with the stores layout, cleanliness (appearance) and customer service. A business can quickly loose customers if the atmosphere is stressful because of disorganization and/or poor customer service. A poorly laid out, cluttered blog theme can also have the same effect on visitors.
So what do I think of Problogger’s new blog theme? Since I am an occasional reader of Problogger the blog theme does matter to me and my first impression of the new theme was “finally Darren has some space”. In the old theme (which I don’t have a picture of because I didn’t think to capture a picture before the change) there was very little room to work with. The old theme was a somewhat narrow two column theme that was quickly becoming crowded the bigger the blog grew.
It seems that Darren (or whomever is in charge of the design) decided to go with another simple theme with a little mores space. The homepage now has a collage of different articles offered on Problogger. Darren has also added a new weekly video post which I found very interesting. This is no doubt going to inspire a wave of Problogger followers to follow in his steps which will probably result in a lot more video blogging around the blogoshpere.
I have to say I don’t have any strong negative or positive feelings about this blog theme. I wasn’t totally impress at first sight but maybe that’s a good thing since simple is better when it comes to blog themes. It’s a nice theme that has allowed Darren to add all of the useful information he has to offer in one place. I am pleased with the navigation bar above the header as well as the footer navigation. The only problem he might see with the footer navigation (which includes the category list and is located on the homepage) is that people new to blogs might miss that part of the site all together because they aren’t accustom to scrolling to the bottom. The blog itself is now separate from the homepage giving the blog a more traditional website look and feel. I also think the new logo is an improvement.
I am sure Problogger will continue to do well with this blog theme since the content offered is so valuable to blogging newbies and pros alike.
