Knowing whether to include a photo of yourself on your blog is something I think that many people wonder about. I know I had to think about whether or not to include my photo on the front page of iwebis. The reason I chose not to include the photo was because I wanted the content to be the focus of the blog not whether people approve of my picture or not (I have included a photo on the front of my Time To Budget blog. I do however think it is a good idea to include a photo of yourself on your blog somewhere (about page).

I realize that some people don’t want to include their photo for privacy and security reasons and I completely understand. But for many it’s not an issue of privacy or security but of possible judgment from others. I believe it’s important for people to be able to see the face of the author in some way. If it is at all possible try not to be concerned about whether people will judge your looks because of your ethnicity, gender or a physical deformity. Your picture might actually encourage other people in this world that have similar backgrounds. This is especially true for those that are minorities in the blogging world.

I have discussed the importance of acquiring individuality a number of times on this blog. Your individual voice can be what separates you from the crowd. Your picture can give a picture to that voice. So whatever your “mug” looks like I think it’s important for people to see it. By the way, there have been people that have successfully used a caricature photos and cartoons. Though I am very curious to know what Maki from Dosh Dosh really looks like, to me he is an anime bunny because this is the character that is seen on Technorati and everywhere else.

So if you are looking for a way to start separating yourself from the pack try including your photo somewhere on your blog. I hope you do realize however that the content is what will really makes a blog. Your photo is just a way for people to put a face to the writer of the content.

You are exactly right. People are social and visual. They connect to a photo of a person, I have recommended using personal photos on web articles even before blogs existed!
