Web 2.0 Tips That Will Make You Smarter ;)

web20.pngWeb 2.0 is here, are you keeping up with the changes? If you are confused about the definition of Web 2.0, you are not alone. I haven’t yet wrapped my brain around the definition in it’s entirety because quite frankly it’s too long of a definition (the compact version is a little easier to understand). However I think I understand the gist of it. Web 2.0 is the changing face of the net. It can include the changing look and feel of web sites as well as user interactive websites. Not only user interactive but user defined.

From what I understand Web 2.0 is not just defined as social media but social media is certainly a part of it. You will see many people using social media and Web 2.0 hand in hand as if one is no different than the other. To put it plainly the Web 2.0 definition was created to explain this new socially interactive, user defined internet. In 2005 Tim O’Reilly attempted to define these changes and came up with Web 2.0. If you feel I am completely wrong in my understanding of this definition, feel free to enlighten me.

With regards to the social media part of Web 2.0 there are some useful tips published by Kevin Stirtz for businesses (Top 10 Tips for Using Web 2.0 to Promote Your Business). These tips can also help blog authors as well. Tips 1 (Have a Plan), 3 (Create good content), 4 (Don’t Sell), 9 (Buy an inexpensive audio recorder) and 10 (Surf till it hurts) are the ones most applicable for blog authors.

There are things about Web 2.0 that I enjoy and others I don’t. No matter what, for anyone who is selling anything online, it’s usually vital to use Web 2.0 for marketing in one way or another. So, ‘don’t sell’ isn’t the best advice. Better advise is “don’t sell unless you know you’re welcome to do so.” Once you have the trust of people in a community you can test out whether they’re open to that. I’ve found some great products and services because someone was properly and respectfully using Web 2.0 to market their products – they took the time to get to know people first, which is so important. :)
