As you may already know I am a mom of 3 children. There is the teenager, the boy and the toddler. I homeschool the two oldest and chase after the toddler. As a stay-at-home mom I am busy all the time. I don’t have time to work outside the home so I decided to find a way to work at home.
I started blogging about a year ago and since then I have made about $4,000 which was for the most part easy money. I decided to become a pro blogger only about 5 months ago and have decided to take my blogging goals in a different direction. I chose to take the pro blogging route because it best fit my life and it offered a lot of freedom. Not only do I have the freedom to work when I want but it also allows me to work how I want. Becoming an independent pro blogger has pros and cons which I would like to share with moms as well as dads, singles, grandparents interested in the blogging professionally.
What makes me a professional blogger?
I have asked myself this question and to be honest I don’t know that everyone would consider me a professional. I do believe that if one treats blogging like a profession then you should be considered a pro blogger. I don’t think making money blogging should be the definition of a pro blogger. On the other hand if you never make money with your blog (if that is your goal) you may not be good at and should consider another profession. So whether you make a lot of money blogging or not but you are have a fairly consistent schedule and goal for your blog(s) then I believe your title should be pro blogger.
Can ProBlogging be a good source of income?
The answer to this question really has to do with what you are blogging about and how many blogs you have. In the blogosphere there are topics (niches) that are sure to get traffic and others that may never get much traffic. However, I believe that just about every blog topic has the potential to making an income if you are able to target the right audience. Many pro bloggers are making money with multiple blogs and/or blogging for other people. So,yes, I believe if done correctly, blogging can be a good source of income.
Why is should moms and everyone consider blogging for income?
Because of the freedom and it encourages self-expression. Most moms have a limited amount of time. We are busy driving our kids from place to place, cleaning the house, homework help or homeschooling, being referees and counselors to our children and the list goes on. If you are in need of an income it is hard to find time for an outside the home job and many times it’s not even worth the money. There are a lot of options for moms to make money at home but I have found that blogging fits my life perfectly (and believe me I have tried just about every type of work-at-home income opportunity) and here is why.
Pros of ProBlogging
- You can set your own schedule. You can blog anytime of the day anywhere their is a computer with internet access.
- You can write about your interests. As moms it can be difficult to find time for self-expression. Blogging allows you to express yourself.
- You can help other people. If you have a knowledge or skill that others can benefit from blogging is a great way to share it.
- Income potential is limitless. Blogging itself can generate an good income but can also open doors for other income opportunities (such as consultant work). If done correctly, your blog can generate income while you sleep, eat and use the rest room. The beauty of the internet is that is never sleeps. If you can establish yourself as leader in your niche you can become very successful.
- You have control over the decisions made regarding your blog. With the exception of seeking the approval of your readers you are in control of your own blog. You can choose the look, layout and content of your blog.
- Blogging is very cheap, virtually no overhead. I pay $10 a month for webhost which offer multiple Wordpress accounts and unlimited domains allowed at no additional charge. I also pay $6.50 (iPower.com) for a year of domain registration.
With Pros there are always Cons. Though blogging has been found to fit my life, there are some things that are not that great.
Cons of ProBlogging
- Coming up with new content can be difficult.
- Generating an income from blogging usually takes time.
- You have to keep up with the changes. This includes blog host updates, anti-spam improvements and blog design. The Internet is every changing and if you are not willing to keep up with the changes, blogging may not be the best choice for you.
- You are in charge of your own blog. Yes, I did include this on the Pros list but it can also be a Con. It is always up to you to find good and interesting content, network with others, etc.
- It’s not easy. Blogging professionally requires thought, planning and knowledge. I spent hours upon hours planning iwebis. From the colors of the links to the name of the blog. I enjoyed it but it was work. If you are getting into blogging because you think it is an easy way to make money you might want to consider something else.
So, there you have it. Some of my history, advice and hopefully encouragement to those that are seeking to become pro bloggers.
