The quick tip for today should help increase your traffic and possibly your page rank. When writing about another blogger don’t just link to their home page (www.blog.com). Instead link directly to one of the posts/articles (www.blog.com/2007/07/07/my-dog-ate-my-homework). Link to posts could do three things to benefit your own blog.

  1. Your direct post link will become a trackback and the author of the blog you are linking to will be notified of the new trackback. Most of the time when I do this the author of the blog visits my site.
  2. Readers of the blog you are linking to will also see the trackback and might visit your site. It’s important to make headlines that are interesting so that people will want to follow your trackback.
  3. If the blog you are linking to follows comment links then this could benefit your page rank.

What to do when direct post linking:

  1. Try to link a post most relevant to your article. Your readers as well as the other blog author will appreciate it if you make the linking relevant.
  2. Try and link to 2-3 of posts from the same blog. You are more likely to get the other blog author to visit your site. I wouldn’t recommend more than 5 links in one post. Remember the posts you are linking to should be relevant to your article. You can offer you readers a list of favorite posts like I do with the BlogRoll Friday posts.
  3. Use relevant keywords when linking to posts. You can either use the title of the post or the main keyword(s) in the post. The blog author will appreciate it and it could also benefit your readers.

So, next time you decide to link to another blog don’t just link to the homepage, link directly to a post.

Update: I forgot to mention the term used for this type of linking - it’s called deeplinking.

I fully agree with you. Linking to a in-depth page (not the index) is highly important because search robots will then make their way up to that link by passing through index and any other intermediate link.

    It’s called deeplinking.
