I have heard it said that blogging is so easy that a monkey could do it. I agree with this statement to some deg
ree. I agree that much of the blogosphere has ‘monkey blogger’ content. A person serious about blogging knows that a good blog requires a lot more intelligence than a monkey can offer. Blogging can be easy but does require more than just opposable thumbs.
Not everyone starts blogging for the purpose of becoming popular or generating an income so I am not talking about personal use blogging. The blogs that I am talking about are those that are desperately trying to become popular and are going about it all wrong.
Monkey see, monkey do is how this creature is described much of the time, so an example of a ‘monkey blogger’ would be one that has no or very little original content. A monkey blogger would also include a blog that copies the look, niche, name and content of a popular blog.
I don’t know how many John Chow dot com type sites I have seen over the last few months. Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with taking after a blog you admire. However, there need not be thousands of John Chow dot com look a likes either. I have also seen Problogger and Shoemoney look-a-likes.
So I guess the whole point of this post is to encourage you to come up with your own ideas, content and look. You are an individual and have something to offer the world so don’t be a monkey blogger.

Don’t worry the monkey bloggers will die off soon enough. Make money online blogs are a fad and soon the John Chow wannabees will run out of things to rehash (and readers)
Very true

So what do you think about John Cow dot Com? He also is an “imitation” blog, but his is one of the most unique concepts I’ve seen. I think if you use imagination like he did, you can genuinely be successful. But otherwise, I completely agree with you!

This is a good point, and good advice. For a blog to succeed, a writer really needs to find their own voice, and not be a pale immitation of someone else’s.
I agree with you that a blog has to be unique in some way, but there’s one little problem. Since there will always be many blogs on every niche, it’s always hard for the newcomers to come up with new content. That’s why i believe it’s OK for them to “inspire” from the already successful blogs, as long as they bring some personal touch to the topic.
Anyway, if a new blogger manages to start a new trend or niche, that would be great, but I’m sure this only happens in like 0.00001% of the time
