Blog Marketing - To Follow or Not To Follow Comment Links?

Don't forget to subscribe to iwebis RSS feed. You can also Subscribe to iwebis by Email Thanks for visiting!

There are a growing number of bloggers that are joining the DoFollow or Will Follow movement. For us to understand what the DoFollow movement is we must first understand what rel=”nofollow” is . rel=”nofollow” is by default attached to most Blogger, Typepad and Wordpress comment links. Blogs that have the rel=”nofollow” attribute tell the Google bots that the link exists but is not allowed any link-juice. Link-juice is what we need to achieve higher PR score.

Just to be certain we all understand what the meaning of this type of nofollow tag is, I have included a Wikipedia definition.

nofollow is an HTML attribute value used to instruct search engines that a hyperlink should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine’s index. It is intended to reduce the effectiveness of certain types of spamdexing, thereby improving the quality of search engine results and preventing spamdexing from occurring in the first place. Google announced in early 2005 that hyperlinks with rel="nofollow" would not influence the link target’s attributePageRank. In addition, the Yahoo and MSN search engines also respect this tag.

rel="nofollow" actually tells a search engine “Don’t score this link” rather than “Don’t follow this link.” This differs from the meaning of nofollow as used within a robots meta tag, which does tell a search engine: “Do not follow any of the hyperlinks in the body of this document.”

The problem with the nofollow is that the links that are from legitimate contributors are also not followed. This means that your comment links (this includes the link attached to your name) are not helping increase your page rank when they could be if the rel=”nofollow” attribute was not attached.

Our main goal when commenting on another’s blog should be as valid contributor but wouldn’t it be nice if our comments could help our page rank as well? I say yes and so should you. There are a number of bloggers publishing DoFollow blog lists. The list includes bloggers that have rejected NoFollow for blog comments aka the D-List.

Some bloggers are including a button on there blogs as an advertisement for this movement. ifollowblue.gif

There is even a Bumpzee community called the No NoFollow -I Follow - DoFollow Community. As far as I know there are only plugins available to Wordpress blogs. However there are a few articles available to help remove the nofollow tag from Blogger , Typepad and Movable Type (thanks to Andy Beard for these links). To join this movement download the DoFollow (WP Plugin) or follow the removal instructions. Once you have activated this plugin or removed the nofollow tage, republish this list on your own blog with your blog included.

Here is a list I acquired from There’s a Blog in My Soup. I am sure there are many more bloggers that have joined this movement but here is a start. No you can be assured that if you contribute valid comments to these blogs your links will be recognized.

The automatic “nofollow” on wordpress comments are something I have been aware of, and which most bloggers aren’t aware of.

    Hi,

Thanks for the opportunity to link to your site. I use Blogger.com because it’s fairly user-friendly. I do have a wordpress blog for another use and am thinking about trying some other free blog services, but I haven’t opened the blog up yet.
