Why it’s a good idea to grow with a startup - part 2

First of all I want to apologize for the many mistakes that where in the last post. Much of my writing is done late at night after the kids are in bed. It may be that many of my posts are barely above Kindergarten level but I will try to do better. Sometimes it is hard to transition from ‘mommy talk’ to adult conversation. So, yes I do know that a question ends with a question mark and car is not spelled with an ‘e’. ;)

Ok, to get back to the original purpose of this post. I am going to jump in where I let off from the previous post.

There are some definite advantages in being part of a growing company or blog, if you are able to recognize a sites potential for success.

I have witnessed a few website that may not have exactly been considered startups but had only been around for a short time, grow and gain popularity. MyBlogLog was very new to the blogosphere just last year. Everything that site offered had ’success’ attached to it. It was different, it was free and allowed bloggers to advertise themselves just by reading other blogs. Yahoo quickly discovered this and purchased MyBlogLog.

PayPerPost was a brand new company about this time last year. You would have thought this company was possessed by the devil with the way people were reacting to this startup. The fact is PayPerPost had most, if not all of the attributes I look for when looking to be apart of a startup. Though PayPerPost was not the first company to pay bloggers for posting ads, it was the first to do it with a ton of backing (3 million dollars in backing). Some of the perks in growing with this startup company where given to those had the ‘loudest voice’ and blogged ads like crazy. Colleen has been on the Top Earners list since the very beginning. Everyone at PayPerPost knows who Colleen is. She is their poster girl and has made over $11,000 blogging for PPP. If she hadn’t been a part of this company from the beginning she would probably not be in this position today. Whether you agree with paid posting or not is beside the point. The idea is to get in on the ground floor of a growing company.

Blogitive (another company I was apart of early on in development) I think was the first company to help increase page rank by paying bloggers to review press releases. As a result of beginning apart of a new company I had the chance to blog on Blogitive’s blog for a few months and get paid.

There are also some benefits to being apart of a blog or reader interactive website that becomes popular. DoshDosh is now a very popular website about making money online. Before Maki moved his blog from a free Blogger account to his own Wordpress blog I recognized that he had the potential of having a very successful blog. And because I was there at the beginning of the growth, one of my blogs is listed in his Make Money Online blogroll (Time To Budget).

The recent BlogCatalog Mass Buzz Experiment also showed that if you have something to offer at an early stage in development (in this case BlogCatalog adding social networking widgets) then you are likely to benefit as well. I had the idea of the BlogCatalog Mass Buzz Experiment that caused a growing company to become intrigued with my idea. As a result iwebis has been posted on thousands of pages at BlogCatalog and over 50 blogs (including pingbacks).

So there you have it. It’s a good idea to grow with startup companies and websites that you think will become successful.

I have future plans to write reviews of blogs that I think will become successful. I also have plans to review free Blogger account blogs that I think are ready to ‘graduate’ to a self-hosted Wordpress blog.

I remember Maki’s early days too, because they were mine as well. I’m not that jealous…. ;-)

Sound advice Mona, and I’m going to follow it by attaching myself leech-like to your blog. Or would you prefer more of a Remora?

LOL! Chris, I had to look up the word Remora.
It’s very kind of you to suggest that iwebis is worth a leech-like attachment. By the way I remember your blog from way back when too ;)
