Reader Input Weekend - Do you prefer reading long or short and sweet posts?

Don't forget to subscribe to iwebis RSS feed. You can also Subscribe to iwebis by Email Thanks for visiting!

Now that I have somewhat of a reader base I want to find out what you prefer as far as article length. Do you prefer the in depth detailed long post or one that is short and sweet but packed

with good information? The reason I ask this question is because as a blog reader myself sometimes I notice that more often then not I skim long posts. I have a limited amount of time and though I wish I had hours to read my favorite blogs I just don’t have the time. So please answer the questions below to help me better understand the needs and wants of my readers. If you are not a regular reader of this blog but have an opinion please share it.

  • Do you prefer one long post/articles with detailed and in depth information? or
  • Do you prefer reading a series of posts/articles over a few days? or
  • Do you prefer a quick ‘get to the point’ type of post/article?

Please include how many words equal a long post and how many words equals a short post in your mind.

I like short and quick to point posts. Post with images and screenshots are better.

Thanks for the input. I am more and more interested in short and sweet posts. I am very busy these days and don’t have a lot of time to read anymore. I also like images and screenshots.

for the most part, short and sweet is good, but for product reviews i like something more substantial. screenshots are a big help!

First of all I want to say that I find it very important that bloggers don’t try to stretch out little content. If there isn’t much to say then keep it short. I have the same experiences as you, I find myself skimming long posts simply because I don’t have the time to read every single word. So I guess I’ll have to vote for shorter ones.

I’m not sure if posts can be strictly classified ‘long’ or ’short.’ It depends on the matter. There would be certain elements you MUST cover, in which case, it could become a ‘long’ post.

A ‘long’ post is fine, so long as it not a ‘dragging’ post, and does not meander over to the inconsequential.

    A Matter of Presentation

More importantly, it all depends on how the matter is presented. A ‘long’ post can be made to look shorter with suitable subtitles (as illustrated above in this comment…lol).

Then the reader knows what’s coming next, and if the readers don’t want to read it, they will take a conscious decision to quit reading, instead of ‘going away’ feeling just bored.

TIP: If you start feeling the post is getting ‘longer’, stop writing. And add the rest of what you want to say under “P.S.: Blah, blah..” lol…. people always read the P.S., even if they don’t read the post!

Oooops…. to answer your question, I prefer long posts with indicators to detailed information (e.g. URL’s to another post on your blog).

P.S.: Of course include interesting images between paras to make the ‘long’ post look ’short.’

Straight to the point. No more than 3 decent sized paragraphs, that’s enough. Simply say what you have to say. State it with meaning and passion. I’ll get the drift.

Short posts are better and goes to the bottom line first. Then if you can’t resist writing long post them I think make a summary on the first part.
